If you had to name just one car that defines rallying, the chances are it would
be the Audi Quattro. It was everything that a rally car should be :
turbocharged, four-wheel drive, and as aggressive as an alcoholic deprived of
Special Brew. When it first hit the world rally scene in 1983, it not only moved
the goalposts, it transplanted them to a different stadium.
Hannu Mikola, who won the world championship in the Quattro that year, recalls
driving it for the first time in a muddy German field and being almost unable
to believe what it was capable of.
Every rally car that came after the Quattro owes something to it. It won
3 world titles and 21 world rallies. And the legacy of those glory days isn't
over yet.
